CULTURE..
The Cycladic
people
excelled in
metallurgy
and in
miniature
arts (tools,
silver pins,
circlets,
necklaces
from beads
or shells).
Painted
representations
engraved in
plates or
rocks were
found, with
hunts or
dances and
other scenes
of the daily
life.
However, the
main
creations of
the early
Cycladic
culture are
the
marvellous
marble
figurines.
Their
production
was
continued
without
interruption
in the
entire Third
millennium.
As the
technique,
the tools
and
experience
of the
craftsmen
are
perfected
they start
as simple
and
schematic in
the
beginning
and end up
to splendid
sculpting
creations.
The Cycladic
people
continue a
long-lasting
history in
the
traditional
arts, with
many
workshops
and a lot of
popular
creators who
provide
their own
contribution
to the
Cycladic
popular
culture. The
islands of
Tinos with
the well
known Marble
workshops at
Pyrgos,
Andros,
Naxos and
Paros,
demonstrate
a rich and
alive marble
sculpting
tradition.
In terms of
other arts,
Tinos is
famous for
basket
weaving,
Syros and
the
Koufonisia
in
shipbuilding,
Mykonos
Naxos, Kea
and the
Small
Cyclades in
textile
weaving, Ios
in the art
of mosaic,
Kythnos,
Naxos and
Sifnos in
ceramics,
Amorgos in
wood curving
and Kea in
building
with stone
and tiled
roofs…. |
